Enhancing the Autonomy of Residents in Self-Evaluation and Self-Improvement

William Varade, M.D., J. Peter Harris, M.D., Constance Baldwin, Ph.D., and Laura Shone, M.S.W., Dr.PH., along with general pediatrics fellows Mark Craig, M.D. and Melissa Cellini, M.D., have been approved by the Innovation and Improvement in Pediatric Education (IIPE) program to develop a longitudinal curriculum to enhance the autonomy of residents in self-evaluation and self-improvement. This project will develop and evaluate a model curriculum that integrates the four components of Self-Determination Theory— autonomy, competence, purpose, and connectedness—into residents' development as independent, effective, and goal-driven learners. The project aims to encourage our residents to engage in active, proactive, and personalized activities that will help them develop effective and efficient habits of continuous life-long learning. Faculty development activities are also planned. The IIPE has approved this and four other programs nationwide to develop innovative models of resident education for careful testing and dissemination.
