Our research focuses on the ontogeny of the mammalian hematopoietic system. Formation of blood is a critical early event for mammalian embryos, initially occurring in the extraembryonic yolk sac of the gastrulating embryo, then migrating to the fetal liver, and finally homing to the bone marrow at the end of gestation. Our studies utilize the mouse embryo, adult bone marrow, and embryonic stem cells as primary model systems to investigate the initial appearance and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitors and precursors as well as their selective response to radiation damage.
