Although our research activities are largely clinically oriented, members of the division have collaborated and continue to work with established laboratory researchers.

Current laboratory research is focused within the pulmonary biology core. (The role of cellular responses and cell signaling in pathogen induced acute lung injury—Dr. N. William Parilla.)

Our clinical research efforts are aimed at improving care by fostering a greater understanding of relevant issues:

  • Minimizing the effects of critical illness on families
  • Understanding alterations in thrombotic function in critically ill children
  • Strategies for minimizing the complications of cardiopulmonary bypass
  • The evaluation of novel, less-invasive therapies for assessing hemodynamic function in critically ill infants and children
  • The potential role of glutamine in post-operative patients

Members of the division collaborate actively within the Department of Pediatrics, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the University, and industry.
