Clinical Experience

Mother and ChildDevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics clinical programs serve children and families throughout Upstate NY, in a region that extends north to the Canadian border and Adirondacks and south to Pennsylvania. Each fellow receives supervised, interdisciplinary clinical training with a primary interdisciplinary clinical setting in our East River Road location sharing space with Pediatric Neurology and Child and Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness. Clinical programs include:

  • Levine Autism Clinic (developmental diagnosis and consultative clinical care for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder and related neurodevelopmental conditions)
  • Physical Disabilities Clinic
  • Infant-Toddler Developmental Program (NICU follow-up)
  • Behavior Treatment Services
  • Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program

Our fellows work with children who have a broad array of developmental problems including behavior disorders and physical disabilities. They provide care ranging from NICU follow-up to adolescent-adult transition. Clinical focus is on autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, speech-language disorders, ADHD, and physical disabilities such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches to service and coordination of care among multiple service systems.

Community and university collaborations afford extensive clinical experiences. Fellows can participate in school-based consultations to children and families throughout the region. We utilize a Chronic Care Model with an emphasis on patient and family-centered care.

Under direct supervision, fellows see a mixture of new patients for diagnosis and follow-up patients for long-term treatment, allowing for longitudinal care. Early in training, caseloads are lighter to allow extra time for learning; clinical pace increases over the course of training with advancing skills.

Fellows participate in developmental-behavioral inpatient consultations with faculty supervision. Fellows may choose clinical elective experiences based on research and career goals.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Training

Fellows receive specific training in the administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedules (ADOS) and learn other measures appropriate to their clinical and research interests. Each fellow provides autism spectrum disorder related teaching to others and engages in autism spectrum disorder focused research.
