Conferences & Mentorship
A hallmark of our Pediatric Fellowship Programs is intensive mentoring of fellows, who have access to a pool of faculty with varied interests and expertise. Many faculty are able to introduce fellows to national-level academic activities which allow them to develop networks that become critical to their future career opportunities.
Academic Core Curriculum (ACC)
Required
The Academic Core Curriculum, hosted by the Department of Pediatrics, provides training in research and other scholarly activities to fulfill Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Board of Pediatrics requirements. Topics discussed include application of biostatistics, clinical and laboratory research methodology, study design, preparation of funding applications, clinical research protocols, public presentation, critical literature review, principles of evidence-based medicine, fatigue recognition and management, principles of curriculum design, outcomes assessment, adult learning and teaching methods, and principles of communication. All are welcome to attend.

Chair’s Fellows Meeting
Required
The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and/or Dr. Patricia Chess, Vice Chair of Education meet quarterly with fellows from our subspecialty training programs in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance over lunch.
Morning Report
Recommended
Our Pediatric residents present the most interesting new admissions for discussion of diagnosis and management at these half-hour sessions held at least twice a week. Faculty, fellows and residents, as well as medical students rotating on the pediatric subspecialty services, are generally in attendance.
The Gilbert B. Forbes Scholar Program
Recommended
The semi-annual Gilbert B. Forbes Scholar Program brings in outstanding scientists of high national and international prominence in biomedical, translational, clinical, or health services research. This program is praised among our faculty and trainees as collaboration and networking within medicine enhances success in research and patient care. The program includes a trainee reception where the Scholar discusses their career path and provides expert career advice to our fellows, residents and medical students.
Pediatric Grand Rounds
Recommended
Our weekly Pediatric Grand Rounds, presented by Pediatric faculty and invited pediatricians from the region, offer a broad spectrum of topics of interest to community and academic pediatricians. Highlights include the Chair’s “State of the Department” presented at the first session of each academic year, and the annual Fellow Grand Rounds where select third-year fellows present their research.
Department of Pediatrics Poster Symposium
Recommended
This annual poster symposium was originally developed to feature the wide breadth of research being conducted by faculty within the Department of Pediatrics. Over the past few years, it has become a favorite venue for our fellows to present their research. Many of our third year fellows and a select few of our second year fellows present and discuss their posters. Faculty and trainees from across the Medical Center are invited to attend.
