Neonatology Fellowship Program: Year 3
The majority of the third year is spent finalizing research project(s) and preparing to present the results at local, regional and national meetings. Clinical skills are refined as fellows take on more of a leadership and educator role in the patient care settings.
Rotations
Acting NICU Attending
Third-year fellows serve as the "acting attending" in the NICU at the Golisano’s Children’s Hospital. The "acting-attending" conducts Attending Teaching Rounds, is primarily responsible for the care of the patients, supervision of the junior on-service fellows and housestaff, communication with families, and appropriate documentation of care and other typical administrative responsibilities. This individual attends in collaboration with one of the Neonatology attendings who retains ultimate responsibility for care of the patients.
Acting SCN Attending
Third-year fellows serve as the "acting attending" in the Rochester General Hospital Special Care Nursery (level II facility) as in the second year. Under the supervision of a neonatology faculty member, they are responsible for rounding with housestaff on a daily basis, providing bedside teaching, and giving formal didactic rounds 2-3 times a week. The "acting attending" manages patient care and communication with families and with other physicians, as needed.
Clinical Support and Continuing Care Rotation (“back-up”)
In addition to responsibilities outlined in second year, the fellow is responsible for presentation of the Fellows’ Conference with increasing complexity in presentation approaching attending level quality. During this rotation, fellows will provide support to the NICU when needed due to acuity or activity level. Otherwise unobligated time is spent engaged in completion of research projects, presentation and manuscript preparation.
Research
Research projects and other scholarly activities will be completed in year three. Research Education in this year will focus on analysis of data, and development of research communication skills including abstract development, poster or platform presentation at a national meeting, manuscript preparation and revision. For fellows who have developed a curriculum or other similar scholarly product, evaluation of the product will be completed and may be put into practice.
