Cardiology Fellowship
Cardiology Fellowship Program: Year 2
The second year emphasizes enhancement of clinical non-invasive and invasive skills, and basic science or clinical research.
Clinical Experience Requirements by the end of the 3rd year:
- Each cardiology fellow must perform and interpret a minimum of 300 pediatric echocardiograms.
- Each cardiology fellow must participate in a minimum of 100 catheterizations.
- Each cardiology fellow must participate in a minimum of 10 pediatric electrophysiology studies.
The fellow is expected to design and conduct a scholarly research project with the guidance of the fellowship director and a designated mentor. Research may be either clinical or basic science investigation.
The fellow is expected to participate in all facets of his/her research project, including design and development, grant and Institutional Review Board proposal writing, Clinical Research Center applications, preparation and presentation of abstracts at regional and national meetings, and preparation of a final manuscript. The Department of Pediatrics weekly Core Curriculum provides seminars on medical writing, preparation of grant proposals, scientific paper presentation, and design of teaching programs.
During the beginning of the first fellowship year a Scholarship Oversight Committee will be chosen to work in conjunction with the fellow, the mentor, and the program director to determine the research project. The committee with meet with the fellow on a regular basis to evaluate the fellow's research progress. ABP Board requirements include these activities result in the generation of a specific written "work product", which may include: a peer-reviewed publication, an in-depth manuscript describing a completed project, an extramural grant application that has either been accepted or favorably reviewed, or a progress report for projects of exceptional complexity, such as a multi-year clinical trial.
Cardiology Fellowship Program: Year 3
The third year focuses on the fellow's research project while maintaining an appropriate level of clinical activity.
