Hematology/Oncology Fellowship

Curriculum

Years 2 & 3

The primary objective of the second year of training is to gain experience in Hematology and/or Oncology research.  This involves learning the principles of designing clinical studies or laboratory experiments and gaining familiarity with a variety of experimental methods.  With the guidance of a Scholarship Oversight Committee,  objectives are formulated,  and a detailed research plan is  solidified early in the second year.  Specific methods are developed, background information obtained  and initial data are generated.

During the second year, clinical responsibilities are minimal, however, physician attending skills are perfected through the on call service, weekly  team rounds and  by acting as the  attending physician on the inpatient service. Consultant and supervision is readily available from a  faculty member.

During the third year the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology resident refines the direction of his/her research project (s) and attention is given to preparing an abstract (s), submit for publication to peer reviewed journal articles, presenting at national meetings, and formalizing a proposal for submission for extramural funding.

Clinically, they act as attending with more responsibility commensurate with their heightened experience while supervising house staff and first year fellows. He/she conducts attending rounds, and is primarily responsible for communication with the families and the development of patient care plans.  The senior attending physician is available to discuss cases and is involved, as needed, in the most complex cases.
