Neonatology Fellowship

Neonatology Fellowship Program: Year 3

The majority of the third year is spent finalizing research project(s) and preparing to present the results at local, regional and national meetings. Clinical skills are refined as Fellows take on more of a leadership and educator role in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Rotations

Acting NICU Attending (4 weeks, total): Third-year fellows serve as the "Acting-Attending" in the NICU at the Golisano’s Children’s Hospital. The "Acting-Attending" conducts Attending Teaching Rounds, is primarily responsible for the care of the patients, supervision of the junior on-service fellows and housestaff, communication with families, and appropriate documentation of care. This individual attends in collaboration with one of the Neonatology Attendings who retains ultimate responsibility for care of the patients.

Acting SCN Attending (4 weeks, total): Third-year Fellows serve as the "Acting-Attending" in the Rochester General Hospital Special Care Nursery (RGH SCN – level II facility) as in the second year. Under the supervision of a neonatology faculty member, they are responsible for rounding with housestaff on a daily basis, providing bedside teaching, and giving formal didactic rounds 2-3 times a week. The "Acting-Attending" manages patient care and communication with families and with other physicians, as needed.

Clinical Support and Continuing Care Rotation (10 weeks, total):  In the third year, this rotation includes assignments to the Neonatal Continuing Care Follow-up Clinic (NCCC, GCHaS). This experience provides continuity for personal education and for families of NICU graduates by addressing questions regarding infant health, development and care, assuring that adequate primary physician and subspecialty follow-up has been arranged and attended and discussing the need for further support of family or infant with health care team. In addition the fellow is responsible for presentation of the Fellows’ Conference with increasing complexity in presentation approaching attending level quality. Each Fellow will also present a conference summarizing follow-up data obtained through the Neonatal Continuing Care Program, highlighting a particular area of interest.  During this rotation, fellows will provide support to the NICU when needed due to acuity or activity level. Otherwise unobligated time is spent engaged in completion of research projects, presentation and manuscript preparation.

Research (30 weeks, total*): Research projects and other scholarly activities will be completed in year three. Research Education in this year will focus on analysis of data, and development of research communication skills including abstract development, poster or platform presentation, manuscript preparation and revision.  For Fellows who have developed a curriculum or other similar scholarly product, evaluation of the product will be completed and may be put into practice.

*May include Neonatal Cardiac Care weeks (see Program Year 2)
