Patient Care Bio

Dr. Anne Nofziger is Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MD from Indiana University School of Medicine, followed by Family Medicine residency and two years as Chief Resident in Rochester, NY. She joined the faculty 2000, and later completed a Dean's Teaching Fellowship in 2007, with a project focusing on peer assessment.

In planning for major curricular reform during the late 1990's, the University of Rochester's medical school recognized a need for a new assessment program, integrating basic science knowledge, evidence-based medicine skills, clinical skills, teamwork, and assessment of professionalism. Dr. Nofziger was instrumental in the development and design of this "Comprehensive Assessment (CA)," and served as the program's director from until 2011. Through this work Dr. Nofziger has developed a particular interest and expertise in the assessment and formation of clinical competence and professionalism among medical students. She has provided consultations to both medical and dental schools about assessment and professionalism. In 2011 Dr. Nofziger will be transitioning away this role to become Director of the medical school's Primary Care Clerkship, an 18-month longitudinal course for first and second year medical student.

Dr. Nofziger's favorite activities involve direct contact and dialogue with students. Her clinical practice in Family Medicine serves a largely inner city underserved population, and she frequently teaches students in this setting. She serves as faculty advisor and preceptor for UR Well, Rochester's student-run free health clinic, and enjoys mentoring students and residents around research projects and career development. She was honored as the faculty speaker at the medical school's 2010 White Coat Ceremony, sponsored by the Gold Foundation.

Dr. Nofziger also serves as a member of the department's committee on medical student education in Family Medicine. She is a member of the steering committee and a lecturer for the Medical Education Pathway, a certificate program for students who hope to become medical educators. She helps to guide the medical school's curriculum in diversity education, is an advisor to the medical student Family Medicine Interest Group, member of the medical school Admissions Committee and various curriculum committees, and has led many small group teaching sessions for students and residents.
