Research Bio
Dr. Caserta's research interest are:
1) Epidemiology and clinical consequences of infection with human herpesvirus-6, herpesvirus-7 in children with special emphasis on epidemiology and pathogenesis
2) Effects of psychosocial factors on susceptibility to infectious diseases
The epidemiology and viral pathogenesis of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6) is the focus of several ongoing basic research projects in the laboratory. One aspect of this work is the study of immune responses in children with latent and reactivated HHV6 infection. Previous experiments in the lab have shown that all children become infected with HHV6 during infancy or early childhood and that the virus remains latent in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Reactivation occurs in a small percentage of normal children and we are examining markers of immune function associated with reactivation, as well as possible outcomes on health in several populations. In addition, studies of the transmission of HHV6 are being pursued.
