Professional Bio
Catherine Nelson, M.D. has joined the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. She will see patients at both Strong Memorial and F.F. Thompson hospitals.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a concentration in Genetics and Development, from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Dr. Nelson earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. From 2006 to 2011, she completed her general surgery residency at Michigan State University Integrated General Surgery program in Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Nelson then spent an additional year as a fellow at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center
at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Nelson is licensed to practice medicine in New York State. She is a member of professional organizations including the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine and American College of Surgeons.
In addition, Dr. Nelson has authored a wide variety of publications related to trauma, surgical critical care and acute care surgery. Her special interests include quality improvement. Dr. Nelson is involved in the community, playing an active role in fundraising initiatives for Operation Smile, Teddy Bear Hospital, MSU and Alternatives for Battered Women, among others.
