Patient Care Bio

Jennifer Carroll, MD, MPH, has research interests that include refugee health and diet and exercise counseling in primary care. Dr. Carroll completed a research study exploring expressions of psychological distress and mental illness among refugees from Somalia. She worked as a medical consultant at the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights. In this capacity Dr. Carroll performed numerous medical evaluations and prepared affidavits for asylum seekers to document medical and psychological sequelae of war trauma and torture. Dr. Carroll was a co-investigator of a study examining the prevalence of torture and trauma exposure among foreign-born patients in Boston, MA and their medical needs. Jennifer is the Principal Investigator for a study funded by AHRQ to examine cultural competency in health care for resettled Somali refugee women with a focus on prenatal care and women's preventive health services.

Since her relocation to Rochester in March 2004, Dr. Carroll has been developing plans for a study to explore how primary care physicians communicate to poor and underserved patients about diet and exercise practices; pilot work is underway. She has written and taught extensively on the topic of refugee health, care of asylum-seekers and torture survivors. Dr. Carroll is a member of Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Physicians for Human Rights, American Public Health Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
