Research Bio
Dr. Carroll is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She holds secondary appointments at the University of Rochester Cancer Center and Center for Community Health. Dr. Carroll is an attending physician at Brown Square Health Center, an urban community health center in Rochester, NY. Her interest is in primary care-based interventions to improve patient-clinician communication about physical activity, and in primary care-community partnerships to promote physical activity. Dr. Carroll is currently the principal investigator of a mentored career development award (K07) from the National Cancer Institute, "A Communication Intervention to Promote Physical Activity in Underserved Communities."
This intervention incorporates novel electronic health records tools and community partnerships to promote communication about physical activity in primary care. She has served as principal investigator and/or co-investigator on several other NIH-funded grants examining patient-centered communication, patient navigation to eliminate disparities in cancer care, and cross-cultural communication with refugee and immigrant populations. She has authored 49 scientific publications on the topics of physical activity promotion in primary care, cross-cultural communication, and disparities in cancer care and cancer control. Dr. Carroll is the recipient of several honors and awards for innovation and/or policy implications for her research from the American Academy of Cancer Research, the European Association for Communication in Healthcare, and the New York State legislature. She is the US member of an eight-nation Early Career Research Network, which aims to foster collaboration and scholarship in health communication research among early career researchers.
