Patient Care Bio

After nearly a decade of practice as a solo rural physician in upstate New York, I worked in Chicago for 4 years as Senior Editor at JAMA. I returned in 2004 to join the wonderful faculty at Rochester. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am also a suite leader at the Family Medicine Center. I see myself as an all-around family doctor.

I have several formal roles in program evaluation at the University. I serve as Director of Assessment at the medical school's Office of Curriculum and Assessment, where I oversee all aspects of assessment of the 4-year curriculum leading to the MD degree. Since 2004 I have published more than 20 original articles about technical issues in assessment of medical trainees. I am also an evaluator for the medical center's NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. I am a Deputy Editor for the journal Medical Education. With a longstanding interest in statistics and technology, I am working towards an MS degree in medical informatics.

In 2007 I founded the Rochester Medical Orchestra, which brings together people from across the medical community to perform two concerts a year in support of local medically related charities. I also perform with the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, as well as numerous pit orchestras for local musical theater productions. I enjoy bicycling in beautiful western New York, as well as gardening, woodworking, and reading historical fiction.
