Professional Bio

Residency: Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology, Brooklyn Hospital Medical Center, Chief Resident 1997-98. Fellowships in surgical pathology and cytopathology (New York University Medical Center), and in genitourinary pathology (University of Rochester Medical Center). Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology; Cytopathology.

Clinical interests include genitourinary pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, Cytopathology (endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy), and the rapid diagnosis of superficial palpable lesions by fine needle aspiration biopsy

Research Bio

I have three major areas of research interests: Genitourinary (GU) Pathology, Tissue Microarrays (TMA), and Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNA).

During my GU pathology fellowship, I became fascinated by the role of neuroendocrine cells in the benign and neoplastic prostate (see Neuroendocrine website). Subsequently, I decided to study the pathogenesis and characterization of a rare and aggressive form of prostate cancer called small cell carcinoma of the prostate (see Publications below).

At the same time, I was introduced to the construction and use of TMAs for translational and clinical research. Our GU Pathology section has constructed a prostate progression TMA and a kidney tumor prevalence TMA, which have proved very useful in translational research at our institution. We are currently constructing prognostic TMAs for both the prostate and esophagus.

As a cytopathologist, I am involved with improving the efficiency of both superficial palpable lesions and endoscopic ultrasound-guided FNAs of pancreatico-duodenal lesions through the use of novel site-specific antibody panels. Working closely with the Immunocytochemistry laboratory, I am currently evaluating various antibody panels for pancreatic carcinoma from material obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided FNA.
