Professional Bio

Dr. Rechtine specializes in the surgical care of spinal disorders. His areas of special interest include cervical and lumbar degenerative disease, herniated discs, myelopathy, and spine trauma.



Dr. Rechtine is nationally recognized in the field of spinal surgery. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Spinal Injury Association and is on the Executive Committee of the Cervical Spine Research Society. He is a reviewer for several journals, including SPINE, the Journal of Spinal Disorders, the Spine Journal, the Journal of the Bone and Joint Society, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma . He has given numerous presentations and written numerous articles. He chairs the annual Contemporary Update on Spinal Disorders, one of the best-known CME events in spine care.

Dr. Rechtine graduated from the University of South Florida Medical School and completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery at the Case Western Reserve University . He has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1982. He comes to Rochester from the University of Florida , where he served as Director of Spine Surgery, Director of Orthopaedic Research, Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics, and Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Rechtine has over 25 years of experience specializing in all aspects of spine care from outpatient surgery to complex spine reconstructions. Dr. Rechtine is careful to explore non-surgical care before suggesting surgical solutions. He has a national reputation for spine trauma, spinal cord injury, and degenerative conditions involving the cervical and lumbar spine.



Dr. Rechtine earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida and served as an Orthopaedic Resident at the Naval Regional Medical Center and a Spine Surgery Fellow at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Rechtine has been active with spine research throughout his career and has published nearly 90 medical journal articles and book chapters. He is a member of all the major national and international spine societies and has held leadership positions in several. He is certified as an orthopaedic surgeon by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Professor in URMC's Department of Orthopaedics and a Professor in URMC's Department of Orthopaedics.
