Patient Care Bio
Dr. Shakeel Shareef is a specialist who treats glaucoma, a disease that affects more than three million Americans, and complex cataracts. He offers patients the most up-to-date diagnosis and treatment options including medication and laser therapy as well as complex surgeries using topical anesthesia such as filtering procedures, tube-shunt implants and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries such as the iStent. Because cataracts occur frequently in patients with glaucoma, Dr. Shareef also performs difficult cataract procedures with patients who may have small pupils, psuedoexfoliation or may have monocular vision due to glaucoma or other conditions
The glaucoma service is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment offering computerized visual field testing, optic nerve imaging and other specialized imaging. In addition patients may be referred for retinal topography and analysis using the Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph.
Dr. Shareef is a graduate of New York Medical College where he also completed his residency in ophthalmology. He completed two fellowships at Washington University School of Medicine: the first in glaucoma research in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science and a clinical fellowship in glaucoma at Barnes Hospital.
Dr. Shareef is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Glaucoma Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and a reviewer for Ophthalmology.
