Oksana Polesskaya earned her Ph.D. from the Institute of Medical Genetics in Moscow, Russia. Her research was focused on studying changes in genome which are associated with schizophrenia. Her postdoctoral research in NIDA/NIH and at George Mason University (Virginia) was related to the biology of drug abuse.
Oksana came to URMC in 2006 as a post-doctoral fellow. Her current research focuses on the interplay between HIV-1 infection and methamphetamine abuse, as well as on characterization of role of mixed lineage kinase in neuroinflammation and on developing new pharmacological inhibitors of this kinase aiming to create a drug which could curb the neurological complications of AIDS.
