Professional Bio

Charles J. Lowenstein, M.D. is Professor of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology, and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of Rochester School of medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Lowenstein obtained his M.D. at the Harvard Medical School. He completed his medical residency at The Massachusetts General Hospital and his cardiology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After 18 years on the faculty at Hopkins, he became Chief of Cardiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2009. He has served on the NIH Atherosclerosis and Inflammation Cardiovascular Sciences study section. He is an Associate Editor of Circulation Research. He served as Chair of the Board of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation, an organization that funds medical student research.

Research Bio

Dr. Lowenstein's research is focused on vascular biology. One team or researchers explores mechanisms of exocytosis, through which endothelial cells release pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic mediators. A second group of scientists study how platelets communicate with endothelial cells. A third area of research involves an exploration of the role of microRNA in endothelial cells. A fourth team investigates how nitric oxide affects vascular inflammation.
