Research Bio
Her research interests include mental and sexual health of women, HIV/AIDS with women and couples, intimate partner violence and psychological trauma, and health intervention research.
Dr. Mittal's initial research focused on developing a better understanding of issues related to multiculturalism and psychotherapy practice with ethnic minorities in the U.S., with a particular emphasis on community-based therapy programs for at-risk families. However, her work has evolved since and is directed at understanding the experience of trauma at the interpersonal, familial, and community levels. She is particularly interested in the interrelationship between the experience of intimate partner violence among women and their risk for HIV infection. In May 2009, Dr. Mittal received a Mentored Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institute of Health to develop a HIV prevention intervention for women who experience intimate partner violence.
