PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program
About the Program
The Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center is a 12-month, full-time curriculum that provides the essential elements needed to mold a well-rounded clinical pharmacist. This intensive training involves activities in a wide variety of practice settings, including:
- Designing and managing drug treatment regimens for hospitalized patients in internal medicine, oncology, critical care, and a variety of specialties.
- Recommending optimal drug management as part of consult services such as infectious diseases and clinical pharmacokinetics.
- Monitoring drug therapy and conducting one-on-one appointments with patients in an ambulatory clinic to provide education, discuss drug regimens, or counsel on adherence.
- Participating in pharmacy practice management activities to broaden the resident's understanding of the role of pharmacy and its integration into the healthcare system.
- Discovering innovative opportunities including solid organ transplant, psychiatry and HIV infectious diseases.
Pharmacists completing the residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center will have gained the skills necessary to be competent and confident practitioners of pharmaceutical care for patients in multiple health care settings. The resident will function as a key member of the health care team and be accountable for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes for their patients. These pharmacists will develop the skills necessary to become valuable providers of education on medication therapy related topics to other health care professionals, patients and the community. The resident will demonstrate professional maturity by developing and following a personal philosophy of excellence, monitoring his or her own performance and exhibiting a commitment to the profession of pharmacy.

Curriculum
Rotation Schedule
The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency is tailored to the needs and interests of the individual resident. The schedule of the pharmacy practice year is outlined below.
- Ambulatory Care Clinic—4 weeks
- ritical Care—4 weeks
- Elective Rotations—12 – 14 weeks
- Infectious Diseases—4 weeks
- Internal Medicine—6 – 8 weeks
- Medical Informatics—Longitudinal
- Oncology—4 weeks
- Orientation—2 weeks
- Pharmacokinetics Service—4 weeks and Longitudinal
- Pharmacy Management—Longitudinal

- Vacation—17 days
Longitudinal Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacy Practice Experience
Following completion of the orientation period, each pharmacy resident will be required to provide pharmaceutical care services and pharmacokinetics consults every third weekend. In addition, the Pharmacokinetics Service will be covered by the residents on holidays. A Clinical Specialist will be on call and will available if problems arise or discussion of a patient's status is needed.

About the Program
The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Golisano Children's Hospital is a 12-month, full-time curriculum that provides the resident with the knowledge and skills needed to provide optimal care to patients. This intensive training involves activities in a wide variety of practice settings, including:
- Designing and managing drug treatment regimens for hospitalized patients in settings ranging from general pediatrics to pediatric and neonatal intensive care.
- Recommending optimal drug management as part of specialty services such as infectious diseases and hematology/oncology.
- Participating in pharmacy practice management activities to broaden the resident's understanding of the role of pharmacy and its integration into the healthcare system.
- Discovering innovative opportunities including emergency medicine and medical informatics.

The PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Practice Residency is a 12-month, full-time curriculum thatoffers the experience of providing patient care in many facets of community pharmacy. It is these diverse settings that will provide the essential elements needed to mold a well-rounded clinical pharmacist. This inetsive training involves activities in a wide variety of paractice settings, including:
- Monitoring drug therapy and collaborating with providers to optimize patients' drug regimens in the family medicine and community care clinics.
- Provide education, discussing drug regimens, and couseling on adherence in the HIV infectious diseases and psychiatric clinics.
- Designing and managing drug treatment regimens for clinic patients in internal medicine, oncology, solid organ transplant and a variety of other specialties.
