PGY 1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Golisano Children's Hospital

About the Program

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Golisano Children's Hospital is a 12-month, full-time curriculum that provides the resident with the knowledge and skills needed to provide optimal care to patients. This intensive training involves activities in a wide variety of practice settings, including:

  • Designing and managing drug treatment regimens for hospitalized patients in settings ranging from general pediatrics to pediatric and neonatal intensive care.
  • Recommending optimal drug management as part of specialty services such as infectious diseases and hematology/oncology.
  • Participating in pharmacy practice management activities to broaden the resident's understanding of the role of pharmacy and its integration into the healthcare system.
  • Discovering innovative opportunities including emergency medicine and medical informatics.

Accreditation

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Its goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures are consistent with the goals and objectives established by ASHP.

Curriculum

Rotation Schedule

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency is tailored to the needs and interests of the individual resident. The schedule of the pharmacy practice year is outlined below:

  • General Pediatrics—4 weeks
  • Neonatal Intesive Care—6 weeks
  • Orientation—2 weeks
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine—4 weeks
  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology—6 weeks
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases— 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Intensive Care—6 weeks
  • Pediatric Pharmacy Practice—8 weeks

Longitudinal Pharmacy Practice / Clinical Pharmacokinetics Experience

Following completion of the orientation period, the pharmacy resident will be required to provide pharmaceutical care services every third weekend and pharmacokinetic consults on assigned university holidays. A Clinical Specialist will be on call and will be available if problems arise or discussion of a patient's status is needed.

Elective Rotations

Elective Rotations are desigend to customize the pharmacy practice experience to the needs and desires of each resident. Possible electives include:

  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Pediatric Renal
  • Pediatric Pulmonary
  • Additional time in any of the required rotations
