Summer Pharmacy Internship Program
We are proud to offer a didactic and robust pharmacy internship program at the URMC. Our program is designed to expose students to a variety of settings within hospital pharmacy. Upon completion of the program, the intern will have gained experience in a variety of distributive and clinical roles.
How To Apply
Recruiting for the summer starts back in October. Pharmacists from the University of Rochester Medical Center attend career day activities at the local schools of pharmacy.
In order to apply you must meet the following criteria:
- Attend a United States or Canadian pharmacy school
- Eligible for a New York State intern permit
- Must be in at least the first professional year of pharmacy school
- Able to provide your own housing and transportation

Program Overview
Objectives
- Gain exposure and knowledge about the drugs used within the hospital
- Gain experience in a variety of distributive roles, including the preparation of sterile products, extemporaneous compounding and operation of robotics
- Attend informational lectures given by pharmacists, pharmacy residents and other pharmacy students
- Hone presentation skills by giving a number of medicine related presentations
- Participate in clinical projects or other research ongoing within the pharmacy department
Details of the Internship Program
- 3 positions for post P-1 students and 3 positions for post P-2 students
- Schedule: Monday-Friday day shift, no holidays or weekends
- Program begins in mid-May and ends in mid-August
- Optional time during fall and winter breaks
- Flexible time off during the summer if requested
First Year Rotations - Distributive Focus
- General inpatient distribution
- Robotics management
- Sterile products preparation
- Extemporaneous compounding
- Cancer Center
- Pediatric satellite
- Introductory clinical rotations
Second Year Rotations - Clinical Focus
Rotation availability will vary from year to year depending on preceptor availability and rotation availability when integrating this program with our residency program needs. Possible rotations include:

- Intensive Care (Medical, Surgical, Cardiovascular, Pediatric, Burn/Trauma)
