Graduate Student Activities and Awards

* Brian W. Jones, Ph.D., received The Wallace O. Fenn Award. This award is given to a graduating student judged to have performed especially meritorious research and who presented a Ph.D. thesis suitable to honor the name of Wallace O. Fenn, a distinguished research scientist, and the first Chairman of the Department of Physiology at the University of Rochester.
* Wei W. Kan, B.S., received The Irving L. Spar Award. This award is presented to a deserving student of exceptional merit and was presented at the School of Medicine and Dentistry Convocation Ceremony, September 19, 2007.
* Matthew J. Betzenhauser, M.S., won a travel fellowship and was selected to give a talk at The 14th Calcium and Calcium Binding Proteins in Health and Disease meeting in La Palma (Canary Islands) Spain, October 15, 2007.
* Matthew J. Betzenhauser, M.S., received the "Chairman's Award" for best poster at the annual American Association of Dental Research (Rochester Chapter) meeting on June 12, 2007.
  Ambrose Sanjeewa Priya Goonasekera, Ph.D., received The Wallace O. Fenn Award. This award is given to a graduating student judged to have performed especially meritorious research and who presented a Ph.D. thesis suitable to honor the name of Wallace O. Fenn, a distinguished research scientist, and the first Chairman of the Department of Physiology at the University of Rochester.
* John Daniel Lueck, Ph.D., received the Graduate Dean's Award. This award is given annually to a graduating student whose thesis work is judged to be unique in potential for stimulating and extending research in the field.
* Yuntao Duan was awarded postdoctoral support through the Schmitt Program on Integrative Brain Research.
* Julien A. Sebag was awarded a Travel Grant for his abstract, "Mechanism of Action of MRAP, an Accessory Protein Essential for MC2 Receptor Maturation and Function," to The Endocrine Society's 89th Annual Meeting, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, June 2-5, 2007.
* Christopher M. Tipton received a Young Investigators' Travel Award to present his research at the Society on NeuroImmunte Pharmacology Meeting, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 11-14, 2007.
* Matthew J. Betzenhauser received the Best Poster Prize at the Salivary Glands & Exocrine Secretion, Gordon Research Conference, February 11-16, 2007, Ventura, California.
* Yuntao Duan was awarded a Student Travel Grant to the 51st Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society in Baltimore, Maryland, March 3-7, 2007.
* Jennifer Hom was awarded a Student Travel Grant to the 51st Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society in Baltimore, Maryland, March 3-7, 2007.
* Matthew J. Betzenhauser was a winner of a Best Paper Award and Travel Fellowship at the Stensen III Symposium in Okazaki, Japan, October 20-24, 2006.
* Tabetha M. Bonacci received The Wallace O. Fenn Award. This award was established in memory of Wallace O. Fenn and is awarded to a graduate student who has performed especially meritorious research and presented an oustanding Ph.D. thesis.
* Brian W. Jones received a 2006 Endocrine Scholars Award for outstanding achievements in basic endocrine research from The Endocrine Society.
* Brian W. Jones received the Anthony R. Means Basic Science Student Award for his abstract, "Rapid changes in phosphorylation state of the TRH receptor in rat pituitary cells in cell lines and in vivo," from The Endocrine Society
* Emily A. Oestreich received a Graduate Student Travel Award to the ASPET annual meeting at Experimental Biology 2006 in San Francisco, CA, April 1-5, 2006.
* Ann E. Rossi received a student travel award for her abstract, "Developmental regulation of mitochondrial triad targeting," from the Biophysical Society to attend and present a poster at the Society's 50th annual meeting in Salty Lake City, UT, February 18-22, 2006.
* Huan Wang won a Best Poster Award in the Molecular Pharmacology Division of ASPET at the Experimental Biology 2005 meeting, April 2-6, 2005, San Diego, California.
* David A. Brown won a Best Poster Award at the 2005 Gordon Research Conference on "Salivary Glands & Exocrine Secretion" held February 6-11, 2005, Ventura, California.
* Sanjeewa A. Goonasekera was awarded the Gordon K. Moe Young Investigator Award at the Upstate New York Cardiac Electrophysiology Society Meeting, October 1, 2004.
* Jennifer L. Mathews received a NIDA Director's Travel Award to attend the College on Problems of Drug Dependence meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 12-17, 2004.
* Amy L. Parkhill, Ph.D., (postdoctoral fellow), and Jennifer L. Mathews, received Young Investigators' Award to present their research at the International Narcotics Research Conference, Kyoto, Japan, July 18-23, 2004.
* Brian W. Jones is the first-prize recipient of a Graduate Student Society Merit Award in the 1st- and 2nd-year category.
* Brian W. Jones received an Endocrine Society Travel Award to attend the The Endocrine Society's 86th annual meeting, June 16-19, 2004, New Orleans.
* Gyun Jee Song received the Mara E. Lieberman Travel Grant Award to attend The Endocrine Society's 86th annual meeting, June 16-19, 2004, New Orleans.
* Tabetha M. Bonacci received a Graduate Student Travel Award from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics for travel to Experimental Biology 2004, Washington, DC, April 17-21, 2004.
* Christopher M. Tipton has received a Young Investigator Award from the Society of NeuroImmune Pharmacology to present his research on "Interleukin-1 Mediated Induction of Mu Opioid Receptor Gene Expression on the Raji Cell Line at the Society's annual meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, March 25-28, 2004.
* Liqiong Gui has been awarded a Predoctoral Travel Award from the American Society for Cell Biology to attend their 43rd Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, December 13-17, 2003.
* Amy L. Parkhill received a travel award to present a poster at the NIDA Mini Convention: "Frontiers in Addiction Research," a satellite event of the Society for Neuroscience Meeting, New Orleans, LA, November 7, 2003.
* Matthew J. Betzenhauser received the Irving L. Spar Fellowship Award. This fellowship is awarded annually to a deserving graduate student entering the School through the Graduate Education in the Biomedical Sciences Program.
* Candace D. Gildner won 3rd Prize in the Fluids/Heat Transfer Division of the Master's Level Competition for her work, "Fibronectin Polymerization Enhances the Tensile Mechanical Properties of Cell-Imbedded Collagen Gels," at the Summer Bioengineering Conference of 2003, Key Biscayne, Florida, 25-29 June 2003.
* Scott J. Cameron received the Dean's Award. Scott received his Ph.D. in May 2003 and is a Clinical and Research Fellow in Clinical Chemistry in the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution.
* Jennifer A. Straub received a travel award from the Keystone Symposia to attend the "Molecular Mechanisms of Apoptosis" Meeting in Banff, Alberta, Canada, February 8-13, 2003.
* David A. Brown received a Best Poster Award at the "Gordon Research Conference on Salivary Gland and Exocrine Secretion" in Ventura, California, February 2-6, 2003.
* Kristen M.S. O'Connell received the Dean's Award. Kristen received her Ph.D. in October 2002 and is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University.

Colloquia

These Colloquia are presented by graduate students in Pharmacology, Physiology, and in the Program in Cellular and Molecular Basis of Medicine. They consist of a 50- to 60-minute literature seminar or research report. Colloquia are held on Mondays at 11:30 p.m. in the Pharmacology and Physiology Conference Room (4-6912).
