The Rochester area, like much of the country, continues to face chronic shortages in blood.  Several times each year, the blood supply dips dangerously low, creating real concern that we may not have enough blood to treat any sudden influx of trauma patients. The American Red Cross estimates that three patients are helped with every donated pint.

Our work here at the University of Rochester Medical Center is vitally connected to the community's blood supply. Whether it's giving a transfusion to a trauma victim, performing an organ transplant, or caring for a cancer patient, the work we do here both drives demand for and depends on a consistent, safe blood supply. It's not unusual to see Strong Memorial's demand for blood products increase by five percent in any given year.

Our goal is to do all we can to ensure that blood products are available every time a Rochester patient needs them. So please, help make our blood drive campaigns a success by participating in them. And bring along a friend!

Upcoming URMC Blood Drives

Everyone Wins When You Give Blood

Friends of Strong will be sponsoring the next Red Cross Blood Drive which will be held:
Friday, October 12, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Location:
LeChase Assembly Hall on the ground floor of the Medical Research Building

All blood types are needed, especially at the end of the summer when the need is very great.

A free movie ticket will be given to all who sign in at the registration table. In addition, each person will be entered to win a Gift Card from the Cheesecake Factory.

Appointments may be made online by going to www.urmc.givesblood.org or by calling Louise Criticos or Melanie Oldfield at 275-2420. Walk-ins are also welcome.

If you have not given blood in the 56 days (112 days for double red) preceding the drive, you are eligible to donate. If you have never given blood before, you will experience a wonderful feeling of giving the gift of life to another person. Please consider participating!

Help Us Reach Our Goal

Please help us to make this campaign successful.

  • If you are eligible to give but do not do so, you are critically needed. Click here now to schedule an appointment.
  • Also consider donating more frequently. Healthy adults can give blood every 56 days. For a listing of blood drives in our area, visit the American Red Cross.
  • If you give blood at a location other than blood drives at Strong or Highland, you can credit your donation to Strong Health by bringing in a form available from Freinds of Strong.

Who is Eligible to Donate?
Your eligibility to give blood depends, among other factors, on your medical condition and past behaviors. Any person in general good health who is at least 17 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. For more detailed information, visit the American Red Cross.
