Patient Care — "Destination Rochester"Not only is URMC's health system, Strong Health, the leading provider in Rochester with over 54% of market share, it is a regional destination for specialized medical care. Advanced clinical services such as pediatric heart surgery, organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, total joint replacement, neonatal, neurosurgery, severe burn treatment, and many subspecialty faculty practices bring patients to URMC from a population base that extends from Buffalo to Syracuse and down to the Pennsylvania border. In some instances, patients from outside Monroe County represent upwards of 60% of total clinical services in these areas. URMC has consequently become an "exporter" of medical services. Additionally, patients from outside Monroe County and families that often accompany them for extended treatment support local businesses (food and lodging). URMC has significantly expanded its clinical facilities in recent years. These projects include the Kessler Family Burn/Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units at Golisano Children's Hospital, a doubling of the capacity for obstetrical patients at Highland Hospital, major upgrading of technology for medical imaging, and the Evarts Joint Center at Highland Hospital. URMC also recently launched a campaign for the building of a new $55 million James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. The 163,000 square foot facility will dramatically increase patient capacity, improve the quality of care, and help the Wilmot Caner Center regain its designation as a National Cancer Institute "Comprehensive Cancer Center." Patient visits at the Center have been growing by 20% per year, and bone marrow transplant volume is second only to Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York State. A study conducted by independent research firm CGR, projects that the expansion will create 1,000 new jobs (direct and indirect employment), 750 construction jobs, and lead to at least $18 million in new research funds.
