Virus Weaves Itself into the DNA Transferred from Parents to Babies

New research from the University of Rochester Medical Center shows that some parents pass on the human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) to their children because it is integrated into their chromosomes. This is the first time a virus has been shown to become part of the human DNA and then get passed to subsequent generations. This unique mode of congenital infection may be occurring in as many as 1 of every 116 newborns, and the long-term consequences for a child's development and immune system are unknown.

Researchers Offer First Direct Proof of How Arthritis Destroys Cartilage

A team of orthopaedic researchers has found definitive, genetic proof of how the most common form of arthritis destroys joint cartilage in nearly 21 million aging Americans, according to a study published today online in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. The findings serve as an important foundation for the design of new treatments for osteoarthritis (OA), researchers said.
URMC Launches New Clinical Trial Service

The University of Rochester Medical Center and the Clinical Trials Coordination Center have launched a new venture that provides a comprehensive array of supply services to researchers running clinical trials. The Clinical Materials Services Unit will assist researchers in the often complex and cumbersome process of distributing investigational drugs to study sites.
