ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS

Every URMC primary care physician is eligible for an academic appointment with the Medical Center.

A well-managed practice with an academic connection.

Dr. Gina Cuyler, an internist, spent some years as an emergency room physician before deciding she wanted the continuity with patients that one has as a primary care physician. She recently left another practice group to join one affiliated with URMC.

What did you gain by moving to a URMC practice group?

There were two significant gains: I believe in decision-making within a group, rather than by a more remote corporate structure. In this practice, there is decision-making right here. The atmosphere is one where everyone, from physicians to nurses to staff, is comfortable having a voice.

How does the academic connection work for you?

Along with caring for patients, I love to teach. I very much enjoy interacting with residents, in particular. Having a faculty appointment with URMC is something I deeply value.

What are signals to you that a practice group is well managed?

Simple things can be signals. A well-managed practice doesn't have long lines of frustrated patients waiting to be greeted by the receptionist, for example. Even in something as basic as that, you have the opportunity to say something positive to your patients.

A Premier Academic Environment

There is ample evidence that URMC maintains a premier academic environment with substantial contributions from primary care physicians.

Primary Care Physicians as Professors, Preceptors, Mentors

URMC physicians are members of the URMC faculty. Not all choose to teach, but there are opportunities to teach in the classroom or to accept students and residents within practices.
