A lactogenic hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). It is a polypeptide of approximately 23 kD. Prolactin receptors are present in the mammary gland, hypothalamus, liver, ovary, testis, and prostate.
