 Overview
Dr. Rich's research interests are quite broad, but his research focuses on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and perinatal/reproductive health effects of exposures to environmental agents such as ambient air pollution, phthalates, bisphenol A, and perchlorate. Dr. Rich is an environmental epidemiologist whose research is directed at understanding not only if specific environmental agents impact health, but also by what mechanism, and in what potentially susceptible sub-group of the population. He also examines the utility of different methodological approaches to address these environmental epidemiology research questions.

Dr. Rich is currently examining the risk of myocardial infarction associated with fine particulate air pollution and specific chemical constituents of fine particulate matter, effects of the drastic air pollution reductions during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics on the preterm birth rate and birth weight in Beijing pregnancies/births, and effects of that same Olympic air pollution reduction on cardio-respiratory biomarkers of various mechanistic pathways thought to underlie air pollutant's effect on cardio-respiratory morbidity/mortality among healthy young medical residents living in Beijing. Other studies are examining the endocrine disruption and inflammatory effect of phthalates, perchlorate, and bisphenol A exposure during pregnancy, and acute cardiovascular responses to varying concentrations of a controlled exposure of ozone in adults.
