Dr. Rand's research relates to improving adolescent preventive services and adolescent immunization delivery. She has described adolescent visit patterns and receipt of preventive services on a national level, and determined how these rates will affect delivery of adolescent immunizations, particularly delivery of human papillomavirus (HPV) and influenza vaccine. She has also examined parent and adolescent perceptions of the HPV vaccine, as well as practical issues related to adolescent vaccine delivery. She has presented her findings to the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, which in turn advises the Director of the National Vaccine Program. She has been the PI of a CDC-funded project to understand the balance between immunizations and preventive services in primary care offices, and has been an investigator on several other CDC-funded awards, all related to improving immunization delivery for adolescents.
Dr. Rand is currently working on a K08 (career development) award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to improve the delivery of HPV vaccine using health information technology, including reminders and electronic chart prompts. She earned a Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Informatics from Oregon Health & Science University as part of this award. In addition, she is the principal investiagator on a project funded by the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine to examine the effect of text message reminders from a managed care plan to improve rates of HPV vaccination.
