Dr. Korshunov's research focuses on vascular biology. First project examines a candidate gene Axl, a receptor tyrosine kinase, in hypertension. Axl is a very promising candidate that regulates both vascular and immune cells in hypertension. Our studies will refine the current concept of the immune response in hypertension. A second project aims to discover causal genes and key pathways of the Glagov phenomenon. Originally described in atherosclerotic patients, Glagov phenomenon is a type of vascular remodeling that preserves the ability of blood to get through the artery. Therapeutic manipulation with vascular remodeling can be crucial for outcomes of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, strokes and peripheral artery diseases
