Jay Dickinson, MD, completed his MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1975. He then migrated south to Duke University for Family Practice residency training, followed by fellowships in both primary care research and medical education. Upon arrival in Rochester in 1980, he focused most of his energies on our medical student training program and on his research interests in how physicians deal with uncertainty.
He was appointed the Department's first full-time Chair in May of 1989 and served in that role through 2002. He also served as President of the national organization of department leaders and chaired one of six task forces for the Future of Family Medicine Project. He now serves the department as senior clinician, teacher, and administrative consultant.
When not attending to Departmental affairs, he can often be found on one of the area's excellent trout streams, in his basement woodworking shop, or reading Latin-American literature
