 Overview
Dr Mohanty's research interests include looking at the role of barrier proteins in Eosinophilic Esophagitis and studying effect of glucocorticoids on tight junction (TJ) function and structure. The objective of her study is to determine if treatment with budesonide will change the expression of tight junction proteins and the esophageal microbiome in children with Eosinophilic Esophagitis. This prospective case series has been approved by the Institutional Review Board. Dr. Mohanty been awarded the Department of Pediatrics Bradford Post-doctoral Fellowship Award for this study.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are frequently reported in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). During her fellowship here, Dr Mohanty conducted a study to evaluate the possibility of an association between Celiac Disease (CD) and ASD and found that the prevalence of celiac antibodies in ASD was the same as in the general population. No increased incidence of CD in children with ASD was identified in this clinic derived sample, although subjective benefit from a gluten-free diet was anecdotally reported by most families who implemented dietary intervention.

To maintain skeletal health in children with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Dr Mohanty designed a study to provide an effective practice-level intervention for improved vitamin D screening and supplementation, and the use of DXA scan to evaluate for osteopenia.
