Biological and Behavioral Assessment Core
We ensure that relevant RCMBR supported projects include reliable, valid and comparable assessments of biology and health and that these data are analyzed and interpreted correctly.
The Biological and Behavioral Assessment Core collaborates closely with the following labs and units:

Xin Tu, Ph.D., Director
The Biostatistics Core assists investigators with study design issues, advises them on the use and interpretation of statistical methods and educates them on the latest developments in statistical methodology of relevance to their specific studies. We also conduct statistical analyses to address research hypotheses and assist with the preparation and submission of final reports, abstracts, manuscripts, and research proposals. We strive to develop new statistical methods to meet the conceptual and analytic challenges in mind-body research.
Training, Assessment and Risk Management Core

The success of our research hinges on the active participation of our research subjects in our pilot studies. We ensure that the Core Battery includes psychometrically validated measures of the key constructs of interest to the RCMBR, and that measures are reliably administered, scored and interpreted. We strive to reduce the risks of research participants by managing procedures that protect the safety and confidentiality of all RCMBR study participants.
Developmental Animal Research Core

The Developmental Animal Research Core seeks out new interdisciplinary collaborations that enhance the personal and technical resources of center faculty to develop models within which to study the short- and long-term behavioral and neurophysiological effects of pre- and postnatal infection and, conversely, the immediate and long-term immunological consequences of early life experiences calculated to influence neurophysiological development and function.
By demonstrating the developmental and long-term health effects of brain-immune system interactions, we hope to influence the research strategies and engage even further the collaboration of other basic science laboratories in this medical center and, ultimately, the teaching of medical, graduate and postdoctoral students about the integrated nature of mind-body relationships throughout the life span.
Human Aging Research Core
The Human Aging Research Core works closely with the Community Relations and Recruitment Core to conduct research in a diverse array of community settings that serve historically disenfranchised ethnic and racial minorities as well as socially isolated older adults.
We also collaborate with members of the Biostatistics Core to examine the measurement properties (means, factor structures and factor loadings, etc.) of the instruments contained in Core Battery. Of particular interest are differences in psychometric properties as a function of the race, ethnicity, or disease severity of research participants.
Community Relations & Recruitment Core

Our goal is to promote awareness, interest in, and acceptance of mind-body phenomena and the RCMBR mission in the Rochester community, and, thereby, develop new community-based research opportunities. We also develop curricula to teach: mind-body principles, research principles and applications, and interpretations of new research findings. In addition we work to increase opportunities for community input and dialogue about our research methods and agendas.
We direct RCMBR investigators to educational opportunities pertaining to community research and provide investigators with opportunities to meet, interact with, and learn from people in the community.
