About Us

The Center's mission encompasses research, education, and innovation.

The Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound (RCBU) was founded in 1986, to unite professionals in engineering, medicine, and applied sciences to advance the use of ultrasound in medicine and biology. The Founding Director of the RCBU was Professor Edwin L. Carstensen, of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Rochester. Over the years, the RCBU has grown from 30 to nearly 100 members at the University of Rochester, Rochester General Hospital, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Center has a long history of leadership and innovation in biomedical ultrasound. Please see the 20th Anniversary Retrospective [5 MB pdf] for a history of medical ultrasound at the University of Rochester.
