Services and PrioritiesThe University of Rochester Transgenic Facility services provide for the production of transgenic mouse models using DNA microinjection and gene targeting in mouse ES cells. Facility services are operated through the School of Medicine and Dentistry and are available to all faculty within the University of Rochester. Genetically-modified mice will be produced for investigators with high standards of quality and with optimal resource utilization (costs, space, personnel, etc.). The Facility's mission is to provide the investigator with highly specialized and timely services at reasonable cost. Only animals from approved sources, known to be free of pathogens, are allowed entry into the Facility. All husbandry practices involve use of strict barrier maintenance. Microisolator cages are used, and animal cage changes are performed only in laminar flow hoods by trained personnel wearing protective clothing. Cages, food, bedding, water bottles, etc., are autoclaved before entrance into the facility. Review criteria for use of the core facility include: (a) scientific and technical merit of the research project; (b) rationale and advantage of using transgenic animals; and (c) likelihood of successfully accomplishing the project goals. A completed project application form complete with valid UCAR approval number is required to initiate Facility services. After receipt of application materials, the Facility will review submitted materials and then the Scientific Advisory Committee will assign prioritization of approved applications.
