RHIC Clinical Procurement Service

What is the Rochester Human Immunology Center Clinical Procurement Service?

A service offered to investigators who require fresh blood samples from healthy human donors for the purpose of developing assays, carrying out pilot projects, and/or facilitating human research.

What is the service that we provide?

We recruit healthy human subjects who are willing to donate blood for the purpose of research. We include a comprehensive health survey with each donor¹s initial visit as well as a follow-up survey at each subsequent visit. Any new health problems, medications, or other factors are identified that may affect the results of an experiment in order to ensure that we are collecting a representative of ³immune healthy² subjects.

An advantage of this service includes that a single donor can be requested repeatedly to verify results or test the robustness of a laboratory assay. A specialized numbering system makes this possible

Are there restrictions on the types of research that can be done with the blood?

The assays performed with the blood from our service should fall within the scope of the IRB approved protocols we utilize. This will be verified by Dr. Sally Quataert, Director of the Rochester Human Immunology Center Core Laboratory. If the work to be done is outside of this scope, Dr. Quataert will determine whether an amendment to the current protocols can be submitted for the type(s) of experiments planned in conjunction with the blood obtained.

In order to use the service, you must have a grant that supports human participation costs to which fees can be charged for its use.

What do I need to do to get started?

Fill out the description of the work you wish to perform on the first page of the application/contract, which can be found in the forms section below, and email it to Dr. Sally Quataert. She will then meet with you to review and complete your application.

How much does the service cost?

A schedule of fees can be seen at the bottom of the page. The cost of the service includes recruitment of volunteers, basic supplies including specific blood collection tubes, comprehensive health survey or health update, phlebotomy, and the coordinator¹s time.

Extra costs may include parking stickers for donors who come to us from outside the University (if applicable), blood tubes other than green top (sodium heparin) or red top (serum) tubes, and large volumes of blood (over 200 mL).

How is blood requested?

We will provide you with a blood request form. We will send out a weekly reminder on Tuesday mornings asking that you submit requests for blood needed the following week by Noon each Wednesday. We will also provide you with detailed instructions as to how to complete the form. You can always feel free to call X34709 with questions.
