  • The Division of Medical Informatics is a group of medical faculty and computer experts whose functions are to
    • initiate research activities in medical informatics which offer substantial overlap with the clinical and research life of the rest of the school
    • lead educational programs and discussions of informatics-related topics related to the conduct of long-term research projects or the improvement of the quality of patient care
    • lead the development of novel prototype applications that may result in useful, institution-wide implementations.
  • The Division has ongoing collaborations with a number of academic and support units, including the Departments of Surgery, Community and Preventive Medicine, Dermatology, and Pathology, the school of Nursing, the Miner Library, Physician Services, and the Information Systems Division.
  • Current projects within the Division include:
    • a multipurpose, interdisciplinary faculty database using object-oriented technology
    • a medical imaging database system that will be easily accessible from any authorized clinical care workstation
    • a Web-based patient profile system targeted at facilitating primary care and ambulatory practices
    • a system for e-mail and pager physician alerts for critical laboratory and radiology reports.
  • Additional activities include alternative database technologies for solving specific research support and institutional documentation problems.
