Post-degree Certificate Program in Marriage & Family Therapy

family 4

The Post-degree Certificate Program is designed to provide Family Therapy Training for professionals who already have a masters degree (MD or Ph.D.) and who are interested in specialty training in family therapy.

Our Post-degree Certificate Program received initial accreditation in 1992 and re-accreditation for the third time in 2004. The FTTP was first established in 1983 under the leadership of Drs. Duke Stanton and Judith Landau. Subsequent Directors were Dr. Susan McDaniel (1988-1994), who initiated the accreditation of the Post-degree Certificate Program and Dr. David Seaburn (1994-2000) who, in 1998, initiated the establishment of the graduate program in marriage and family therapy. Dr. Pieter le Roux has been the Director of the FTTP since 2000.

Family Therapy Training at the University of Rochester provides an integrative, biopsychosocial approach to clinical practice.  A range of seminars, clinical externships, and clinical courses are available to students who have completed a doctoral or masters program in marital and family therapy or a closely related field.  Students are generally full-time employees and work in a variety of medical and community mental health settings.  Post-degree courses are offered in conjunction with courses in the masters program in order to meet individual needs.

Clinical externships are designed to develop and extend therapists’ skills working with a variety of marital and family problems.  Skills are developed through live supervision, which is the cornerstone of the clinical extern’s training.  The trainee is provided with an in-depth opportunity to integrate family therapy theory and techniques with issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, health, and larger systems concepts. The externship teaches trainees to be Student studying in the Rush Rhees librarypart of an interdisciplinary team and to provide short and long-term consultation and psychotherapy.

As part of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, the program has access to several excellent libraries, including the program library.  In addition, the Program has ample equipment for training students clinically.  Staff members are available to videotape psychotherapy; and training in four (4) on-site psychotherapy rooms have observational facilities.

How to Apply

Applications to the Post-degree Certificate Program are accepted on a rolling basis; Faculty members interview eligible applicants; A program of study is prepared for each student entering the Post Degree Certificate program during the interview process.

The suggested program of study and prerequisites to enter the Post Degree Certificate program are determined by a review of the credentials of each trainee and an assessment of the courses previously taken.  There are certain core courses that individuals need to complete in order to meet the requirements of the certificate program - i.e. Family Therapy Theory courses and Intensive Live Supervision.
