- Fellow and Researcher Completes Neuroradiology Fellowship
|
Dr. Akio Hiwatashi has completed his diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology fellowship. Dr. Hiwatashi came to us in 2001 as a researcher and continued on as first a diagnostic and then an interventional neuroradiology fellow. He has now completed his training and will go back to Japan for a short period of time and then is anticipated to return to Rochester. During his stay in Rochester, Dr. Hiwatashi has produced an extraordinary amount of academic work. Plus, he has presented 32 posters, 61 presentations, 18 articles, 5 book chapters, and 1 book. We congratulate Dr. Hiwatashi and wish him best luck for his few months in Japan and look forward to his return. |
- Dr. Carsten Wikkelsø Visiting Professor
- Visiting Professor from the Karolinska Institute gives Grand Rounds
|
|
| Dr. Claes Kilander from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden visited the Division of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology and gave a lecture on diagnostic imaging of low back pain. Dr. Kilander is collecting large research material on the validity of imaging and its relationship to positive outcome from surgery. Dr. Kilander presented his approach to spine diagnosis and entertained lots of challenging questions. He is pictured above with Cindy Zink, our physician assistant. |
- New Multipurpose Room Produces Exquisite Myelographic Quality
|
| The new multipurpose flat-paneled detector room (seen above) has proven to provide exquisite details of myelographic images. This patient had clear symptoms of a left C-6 radiculopathy and the cervical myelography performed with cervical puncture clearly demonstrates the abnormality. The quality is superior to what we have seen in the past and the radiation doses are much lower. |
 |
- Neuroradiology Fellow Pays Return Visit
|
| Dr. Jeevak Almast (pictured above with Dr. Westesson), who was our Neuroradiology Fellow from 2003-2005, returned to give lectures and board reviews to our radiology residents and to take the USMLE exams. |
- Dr. Claes Kilander Visiting Professor
- New Flat Panel Multipurpose Radiographic Room
 |
| A new flat panel multi purpose radiology room is being installed for our myelography service. The room will be operational in the beginning of May and will accommodate our growing myelography and spine service. This room will easily allow us to obtain high quality images in all patient position using total digital technique. |

Former Chief of Neuroradiology, Dr. Yuji Numaguchi, sends greetings from
Japan with photographs of a very beautiful spring with cherry blossoms in bloom. Here in Rochester we are slowly waiting for spring after a very mild winter. |

The March 2006 issue of AJNR gives a wonderful review of Dr. Ketonen's book "Pediatric Brain and Spine: An Atlas of MRI and Spectroscopy". [see AJNR Am J Neuroradio 27:723-24, Mar 2006.]
"Overall, this is an excellent pediatric neuroimaging atlas, covering almost all pediatric central nervous system disorders and many other rare conditions with high-resolution images with the most current and relevant references. This atlas can serve as an excellent book for not only radiologists, but also pediatricians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and pediatric
neurologists."

- Teleradiology changes the practice and economics of radiology
A recent NEJM article discusses the practice of teleradiology and its impact on how radiology is traditionally practiced. |

- Pudendal Neuralgia Brochure Updated
- Neuroimaging Clinics of North America add to Neuroradiology Library
The Neuroradiology Division has made an addition to its library. Starting January 1, 2006 we are now subscribing to the Neuroimaging Clinics of North America, which is a quarterly 200-page book. The current issue entitled "Stroke II: Imaging techniques and future directions" is interesting and very pertinent to what we do. Neuroimaging Clinics will be listed under a separate book list and will be available to the faculty and fellows from our library. |

- Major Review Article on Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Published
A major review article on the diagnosis and treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on January 26, 2006 [N Engl J Med 2006;354:387-96]. From an imaging point of view it is interesting to see how CT angiography is gaining acceptance and has almost replaced regular angiography. |

- Dr. Kakimoto leaves for Denmark
| Dr. Naoya Kakimoto recently finished his term as a visiting professor in the Division of Diagnostic & Interventional Neuroradiology. During his stay Dr. Kakimoto wrote three papers on maxillofacial imaging, two are in rendition and one was submitted to a prestigious journal. He also made a major contribution to the Larheim and Westesson “Maxillofacial Imaging” book which was released at the 2005 RSNA.
Dr. Kakimoto will continue his sabbatical stay by going to the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. He will study 3-dimensional imaging of the maxillofacial area before he returns to his home university in Osaka, Japan. It was a great pleasure to have Dr. Kakimoto with us for this one year.

- Neuroradiology Library Expanding
| Our Neuroradiology Library which was started in 2001 has continued to grow. We now have 167 books in the Fellows Study and Research Room. The most recent addition to the Neuroradiology Library is a book dedicated to the imaging of stroke. This group from Europe has a long and deep experience of MR imaging in ischemic stroke and had presented this combined experience in a 300-page volume with clinical imaging and quality of studies of ischemic stroke. The book is well-written and provides information about imaging, clinic, and the correlation between the two and is up-to-date on this hot topic. |

|
"Axial MR Head Anatomy," by Dr. Hannah Chang, the fifth chapter in the Neuroradiology Normal Anatomy Series is now online. |
- Nonsynostotic Occipital Plagiocephaly
Dr. Joseph E. Losee, Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, recently published a landmark article entitled: "Nonsynostotic Occipital Plagiocephaly: Radiographic Diagnosis of the 'Sticky Suture'," Plast Reconstr Surg. 2005 Dec;116(7):1860-9, with co-authors from the Division of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at the University of Rochester (Manoj Ketkar, P-L Westesson). The conclusion of this article is in contradiction to previous reports - lambdoid craniosynostosis is not radiographically unique among suture fusions. This work establishes the radiographic diagnosis of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly. |
