Students of Rochester Outreach

Agencies

SRO's primary goal is to provide students with an opportunity to broaden first-hand experience with the urban poor. The emphasis at all sites is to establish relationships with agency clients and to develop an appreciation for the social and cultural dimensions of health through attentive, compassionate listening.

Child/Parent Support

Brown Square and Woodward Health Centers

  • Promote literacy and English language skills by reading to children in the waiting rooms of these family health centers.
  • Students set their schedules with preceptors.
  • Preceptors: Lindsey Phillips, MD, Joy Murphy, MD.

IBERO Rainbow Day Care Center

  • Parental education and individual child support in a Latino/a setting.
  • Every other Tuesday or Thursday, 2:30-4:40 pm
  • Preceptor: Aida Veras, Director.

Monroe County Foster Care Pediatric Clinic

  • Interview foster parents and their children.
  • Reading Readiness Program Read to children from the clinic's library.
  • Preceptors: Elizabeth McMahon, RN.

ROK - Reaching Out to Kids

  • Provide emotional support for children with Cancer and their families. Training is provided.
  • Students set their schedule with families, once a week for 1-2 hours.
  • Preceptor: David Korones, MD

Therapeutic Juggling at Mary Cariola Children's Center

  • Work with children ages 7 - 12 with varying disabilities to teach them to juggle, improving motor skills and concentration while fostering self-esteem and confidence.
  • No juggling experience required.

Westside Adult Learning Center

  • Help preschool children develop English language skills by reading and playing alphabet games.
  • Preceptor: Louise Andrews, preschool teacher

Education

Black Scholars Program

  • Mentor underrepresented minority high school students interested in entering a health-related field, clinical or academic.

Community Speaker Series

  • Organize speakers from the community to address students on social and political topics that influence health outcomes in Rochester.

Hadassah's "Check It Out" Program

  • Hadassah is a Jewish women's organization whose primary foci are health education, social action and advocacy, and leadership training.
  • Work with members of Hadassah to teach high school students about breast and testicular cancer.

PAH, MD - Promoting Awareness in Healthcare, Medical and Deaf

  • Design and carry out service projects with this group dedicated to promoting awareness of deaf / hard-of-hearing issues in the health care community and to increasing access for health care among Rochester's large deaf / hard-of-hearing population.

School #14 - In Class and After School Training

  • In Class Tutors - Work one on one with a child promoting reading and writing skills.
  • After School Program - Tutoring and playing with inner city school children.
  • In class tutors set their schedules with the preceptor.
  • Preceptor: John Bliss, classroom teacher.

  • Work with a multidisciplinary health team giving support to the elderly in their homes.
  • Preceptor: Carole Bell.

Family Health

Isaiah House

  • Students are trained to offer support to dying patients and their families at this hospice.
  • Students set their schedule with preceptor.

Clinton Family Health Center

  • Work with a community-based health team at a clinic setting serving a predominantly Latino/a population.
  • Students set their schedule with preceptor, every other week.
  • Preceptor: Elizabeth Romero, MD (former SRO student).

Continuity of Care for Families

  • Learn about continuity of care for inner city families by meeting with one family throughout the year to discuss prescribed medical programs and possible barriers to patient compliance with these medical programs.

Homeless

Bethany House

  • Volunteers participate in a women's support group at this drop in center.
  • Every other Thursday, 12:00-3:00 pm.
  • Preceptor: Donna Ekert, Director.

The Health Association's Rosa Wims Family Wellness Center

  • Health Screening - Work with nursing students to screen clients for hypertension.
  • Preceptor: Esther Manhertz, Director.

Melita House

  • Serve as needed for babysitting or house activities (cooking, cleaning, painting, etc.).

Ophthalmology Outreach

  • Community based eye care. Volunteers will be part of a team with physicians and nurses who measure visual acuity and check for eye disease at local homeless shelters (seasonal).
  • Preceptor: Kimberly Lawrence, Coordinator.

St. Mary's Health Reach

  • Work with nurse practitioners delivering health care, counseling, and TB screening at Rochester area homeless shelters.
