Second Opinion Becomes Part of the PBS WORLD Schedule
Second Opinion, a popular medical and health show produced in Rochester by WXXI and hosted by nationally acclaimed Dr. Peter Salgo, shares how doctors navigate their way through tough medical decisions. The University of Rochester Medical Center is a major sponsor of Second Opinion with faculty from the School of Medicine and Dentistry frequently appearing on the show. Entering its fourth season on 221 stations, Second Opinion will soon be part of the program schedule for PBS WORLD, the new digital PBS network programmed by WGBH. URMC Recognized for Care of Patients with Respiratory Disorders
U.S. News & World Report’s 2007 America’s BestHospitals issue has listed the University of Rochester Medical Center’s programs in Respiratory Disorders as the 37th best in the nation. Selected from among 5,462 hospitals, URMC’s ranking is based on high volume of demanding procedures, low mortality, availability of technology and advanced patient services, high quality and robust nursing care, and reputation. The ranking encompasses all of the Medical Center’s pulmonary care programs – from outpatient services to inpatient treatment, including critical care. Read more.
Rochester Offers Gene Test to Detect Deadly Childhood Disease
Rochester has become one of only a handful of communities around the world to offer a genetic test to detect Batten disease, a deadly inherited disorder. The Batten disease center at the University of Rochester Medical Center now offers genetic testing – the only way to definitively diagnose the disorder – for the three most common forms of Batten disease. The testing is done through the Molecular Diagnosis Section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; the section is led by Professor Paul Rothberg, Ph.D. Read more.
Cancer Stem Cell Scientists Get $1.7M to Develop New Leukemia Drugs
Cancer stem cell researchers at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center have received grants totaling $1.7 million to pursue the study of experimental therapies that target leukemia stem cells. The team of scientists, led by scientists Craig Jordan, Ph.D., and Monica Guzman, Ph.D., will use the funding to develop new therapies to attack leukemia stem cells. Duane Hassane (MS ’97), a senior member of the research team, has developed a unique computer method that assists with exploration of ways to identify promising new Leukemia drugs. Read more.
Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute Opens
On August 20, 2007 the Aab Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRI) opened in Henrietta. More than 100 scientists, students and technicians, currently housed across the Medical Center's campus, will be brought together under one roof. The 15 cardiovascular research laboratories moving to the new institute currently conduct more than 50 research projects with the goal of furthering the understanding of heart disease. Along with cardiovascular scientists, the newly renovated facility will house 15 researchers from Functional Genomics, a core facility that services researchers throughout the University and Medical Center, providing analysis of genetic material using state-of-the-art techniques.
