Module Five : Home

Numerous societal and technological trends have led to the development and use of electronic databases in maternal and child health. With these developments have come increased risks for breaches of individual privacy, while at the same time technological solutions make possible levels of data privacy not possible with paper-based systems. MCH data analysts need to become familiar with ways to protect individual privacy while addressing their analytic needs.

Goals

Through completion of this module, students will be to learn:

  1. Understand the tradeoffs between individual privacy and the health of communities
  2. Describe three ways in which electronic databases can create an environment that could breach individual privacy.
  3. List four strategies for addressing protection of individual information that agencies can adopt.
  4. Provide three examples of how maternal and child health data can be uniquely sensitive if released inappropriately.
