Module Two : Home

Now that you are aware of some of the reasons agencies have for collecting and analyzing MCH data we will give further attention to the process of data collection. Module Two addresses the basic principals of operationalization and measurement. The process of transforming a research concept into a measurable variable is known as operationalization, while the act of collecting values for a variable is termed measurement. We will review both of these processes and discuss how the type of variable chosen influences the kind of analysis which may eventually be performed.

Participants will expand their use of CDC Wonder, build upon the project begun in Module One, and further develop their web skills. Students will gain practice:

1. Downloading and reading an Adobe Acrobat file

2. Running and emailing a CDC Wonder query

Through the completion of module two, students will learn to:

  1. Understand and provide examples of the conceptualization and operationalization processes.
  2. Identify and describe four types of variables.
  3. Define values and how they are related to analysis.
  4. Understand the development of indicators in maternal and child health.
