Program Overview

groupOur philosophy at the University of Rochester Department of Anesthesiology is embodied in one word: excellence. In resident education, in clinical care and in clinical and basic research.

In a brief three-year period, our residents are immersed in a rich educational environment. They get individualized clinical instruction, formal didactics, and access to educational media and resources.

Our graduates consistently secure the career opportunities they want, as clinical practitioners, academicians, and researchers. 100% of our graduates from the last two years passed the written American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) exam on their first attempt.

To measure the clinical competency of anesthesiology residents, the ABA specifies both essential and acquired attributes. Essential attributes include ethical behavior, reliability, conscientiousness, responsibility, adaptability, and adequate cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor faculties. Acquired attributes include communication skills, commitment to continuing education, adaptability, and thoroughness.

Our Curriculum is modeled from the ACGME's six core competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practice. We use multiple teaching and assessment tools to ensure that our residents graduate highly skilled in all competencies.

We seek prospective residents with an intense interest in anesthesiology as a career. They are committed to excellence.
