Research Overview

Anesthesiology residents typically do research in the CA-3 year and work with a faculty mentor.

The following are a few examples of research areas and related faculty mentors:

  • Outcomes (Dr. Laurent Glance)
  • Mitochondria (Dr. James Robotham and Dr. Paul Brooks)
  • Respiratory control (Dr. Denham Ward, Dr. Suzanne Karan, and Dr. J. Russell Norton)
  • 3-D animation (Dr. Paul Bigelesien)
  • Sepsis/ARDS (Dr. Peter Papadakos)
  • Neuropathic pain (Dr. Robert Dworkin)

The decision to allow research time is based on a resident's demonstrated commitment to research, feedback from the department's research committee, and proof of outstanding clinical skills.

Research Fellowship

For residents with a strong interest in academic medicine and research, we are excited to offer a combined residency with a one-year research fellowship. The research year will follow successful completion of the CA-2 year and will be under the mentorship of a senior faculty member at the University of Rochester who has a strong record of research accomplishments and ideally NIH clinical or basic science funding. We can facilitate a fellowship within the Department or with clinical/basic scientists within the Univerisity of Rochester system to best match your interests.

Residents may apply for this competitive position during their PGY-1 year. The Chair will be pleased to discuss options and provide mentorship in preparation for an application and throughout the fellowship period.

The Department supports world-class research in clinical trials for neuropathic pain (see www.urag.net/Public/content/Faculty-rdworkin.php) and a basic science group focused on the role of mitochondria under acute stress, including cardiovascular disease and hyperglycemia (see www.urmc.rochester.edu/mrig/).
