CurriculumCareer Focus ProgramAt the end of the first year of residency, trainees are expected to select an area of career focus. This focus may be on clinical care in preparation for private practice, on education to prepare for a career as a clinical educator, or on clinical or basic research. Over the course of the second year, in collaboration with a faculty mentor, each resident selects a project to be conducted during the third year of training. The project that is selected will give them experience in their expected career focus area. As an example, a resident interested in education may decide to put together a lecture series for internal medicine residents, to teach them some basics of dermatology care, and to help them better understand when and how to access dermatology expertise. A resident interested in clinical research may design a clinical research project. The project selected is conducted in the third year, so residents will gain hands-on experience in their area of focus before they graduate. These projects also allow graduating residents with special interests to be able to demonstrate their expertise at graduation. The curriculum allows time for concentrated effort in developing and conducting these projects. ElectiveOne month of elective time is available during the third year. One option: The University of Rochester Medical Center sponsors a poverty elective in Guatemala, and Dermatology residents are welcome to participate. In addition, the faculty encourages residents to seek out interesting educational opportunities for elective experiences. |
