SubspecialtiesDermatopathologyThe goal of dermatopathology training is to ensure that each resident has a broad knowledge of the histopathologic features of skin disease. Teaching sessions, conducted weekly, consist of reviews of interesting cases and formal didactic lectures. During inpatient dermatology rotations, residents attend dermatopathology case sign-outs daily and review cases over a multi-headed microscope with a faculty member who is board-certified in dermatopathology. Furthermore, an intensive two-week dermatopathology rotation is attended annually by each resident. Pediatric DermatologyDermatologists treat patients of all ages, and the proficient treatment of pediatric skin disease requires distinct clinical training. Dermatologists must be prepared not only to treat common pediatric disorders, but to recognize rare syndromes and disorders unique to childhood. Treatment of pediatric patients is integrated into general dermatology clinics and is further emphasized in bimonthly pediatric clinics at Strong Memorial Hospital. These clinics, directed by clinical faculty with training in both pediatrics and dermatology, prepare residents to care for the total spectrum of pediatric dermatological problems. Dermatologic SurgeryThe Department of Dermatology is actively involved in dermatologic surgery, with training provided by two dermatologic surgeons. Moh's micrographic surgery is performed four days per week and involves active resident participation. There is a bimonthly supervised resident surgery clinic, selected cases for residents for their Moh's rotation, and a multidisciplinary melanoma clinic. At the completion of training, residents are skilled in the surgical techniques of simple and complex excisions, layered closures, grafts, and small flaps. Surgery journal club is conducted monthly. Laser SurgeryDermatology residents have a basic seminar each year that covers the general principles of cutaneous laser surgery. Laser tissue interactions, safety, and hands-on training are provided for all major dermatologic lasers. Direct supervised laser use occurs in a monthly laser clinic. Further exposure to laser usage is available at the Genesee Valley Laser Center on a weekly schedule. A full laser library with texts and current relevant literature is updated continually in the resident's room. At the completion of training, residents will be knowledgeable in the use of dermatologic lasers for vascular, pigmented lesions, tattoos, hair removal, benign lesion ablation, psoriasis treatment, and non-ablative photo rejuvenation. |
